Break-even is the price at which selling everything you hold would bring your total P&L (realized + unrealized) to zero.

How the average cost method works

Each purchase adds its cost to your position and raises or lowers your average price per coin. When you sell, the cost of the coins sold is your average cost at that moment, and the difference with the sale price is your realized profit or loss. What remains is valued at today's price; the gap with its cost basis is your unrealized profit or loss.

Example: buy 1 BTC at $10,000, then 1 BTC at $20,000 — your average cost is $15,000. Sell 0.5 BTC at $30,000: realized profit is 0.5 × (30,000 − 15,000) = $7,500. You still hold 1.5 BTC with a cost basis of $22,500.

This is the method ZenQi uses across all your portfolios, every time a price updates. Start tracking for free.

Questions

Is average cost the same as FIFO?

No. FIFO sells your oldest coins first; average cost blends all purchases into one price. Average cost is simpler and is what most portfolio apps show. Tax rules differ by country — check which method applies to you.

Does the calculator include fees?

Not separately. Add fees to the price you paid (for buys) or subtract them from the price you received (for sells) to account for them.

Is my data saved?

No. Everything runs in your browser and disappears when you leave the page. To keep a history, create a free ZenQi account.
